'In Almere is alles nieuw; daar is geen replica uit de Gouden Eeuw te vinden. Het heeft zijn korte geschiedenis, die meer is dan charme, en wie er goed kijkt zal het geen moeite kosten te zien dat de nieuwe stad en het nieuwe land ook mooi zijn, weergaloos.'

'Everything in Almere is new; there are no replica's from the Golden Age to be found here. It has a short history which is more than charm , and for those who observe carefully it will not be difficult to see that the new town and new land have an unparalleled beauty of their own.'

And more snow, but today
with the sun!

From my house I have a view on these houseboats.

There are so many great tits and redbreasts in my little back garden,
it is a feast for the eye!

South Africa

Ten years ago I made a trip by train in South Africa from Johannesburg until Cape Town. I made a lot of pictures of the tourist attractions.
And sometimes things happen when you have your camera nearby.
I scanned some of my favourites.

Durban, these ladies were here at the beach for a photoshoot.
And of course I took one!
This was our train, I made this photo in a bend, hanging out of the window.
These people were buying oranges, we were in a little bus. On the train were five of these busses to bring us to all places. We slept in the train.
By Cape Town, mother and the little one. Isn't she sweet?

Soestdijk Palace

Backside of the palace
Soestdijk palace is a former residence of the Dutch royal family.
It has a long history that goes back to 1650.
After the death of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernard in 2004, the Palace remained empty and since 2006 it is open to the public.
The future is still unknown.
I was there yesterday to see the exposition of
M.C. Escher (1898-1972); a Dutch graphic artist.

He is known for his often mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs and mezzotints. Many of Escher's works employed
repeated tillings called tessellations.
Unfortunately it was forbidden to take pictures in the Palace.
It was a very interesting exposition and funny that you could walk in the palace and see the rooms the royal family lived.
It is not a exactly a beautiful palace. The garden,
however, is certainly worthwhile.

The garden is created in 1915 by Leonard Springer

My home is my castle

This castle in Almere has never been finished and is a current ruin. Started in 2000 and stopped after two years because of financial problems. It is based on the design of the 13th century castle Jemeppe in Hargimont in Belgium.

It says:
No admittance for unauthorized persons, report at men at work.
Men at work?

Japanese in Holland

It is a long time ago I wrote something on my blog. Back again!
Last week I made a cycling- and sailing tour through the south of Holland.
We also slept on the boat. It was wunderful to cycle along
all the rivers and canals.

Our boat the 'Christina'

Kinderdijk is situated in a polder at the confluence
of the Lek and Noord Rivers.
To drain the polder, a system of 19 windmills was built around 1740.
This group of mills is the largest concentration of old
windmills in the Netherlands.
The windmills of Kinderdijk are of the best known tourist sites.
They have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

Of course we had rain now and then.....
