'In Almere is alles nieuw; daar is geen replica uit de Gouden Eeuw te vinden. Het heeft zijn korte geschiedenis, die meer is dan charme, en wie er goed kijkt zal het geen moeite kosten te zien dat de nieuwe stad en het nieuwe land ook mooi zijn, weergaloos.'

'Everything in Almere is new; there are no replica's from the Golden Age to be found here. It has a short history which is more than charm , and for those who observe carefully it will not be difficult to see that the new town and new land have an unparalleled beauty of their own.'

WitchWorld in Sweden

In Mönsteras in Sweden entrepreneurs from Almere develop an ultramodern fairyland, like the ‘Efteling’ in Holland.
The fairy-tale caracters for the Parc are shown
in a shop-window in the Citymall of Almere.
This is Caloria, she is a member of the Witchwatchers, but not fanatical!

I'm longing for the spring and was thinking of Paris.
Here some pictures I made last year.

The Place Dauphine
is a public square located near the western end of the Île de la Cité.
It was initiated by Henry IV in 1607, the second of his projects for public squares in Paris, the first being the Place Royale (now the Place des Vosges).
We were on this square in the Hotel Henri IV, a simple,
but good place to stay when you visit Paris !
So quiet! Where is everyone?

Bibliothèque nationale de France
is one of the largest and most important libraries in the world ,
designed by the architect Dominique Perrault.
The four towers of 79 m. symbolize four unfolded books.

The Cinémathèque Française
holds one of the largest archives of films, movie documents
and film-related objects in the world.

Drifting Ice

Probably the last ice of this winter, here in the IJmeer in Flevoland

vrijdag 10 februari 2012

On friday I'm singing in a choir. On my way home I met this statue,
never seen before!
It is from Thomas Houseago, bronze and placed in 1998.
It was glistening in the sun. No title, but he looks like a hard worker, staring at his duties or wiping his forehead?

Skating on the canals in Amsterdam

It is still possible to skate. But how long?
The weatherforcast isn't very optimistic.
It is rare that you can skate on the canals.

vrijdag 3 februari 2012

It is cold and snowing for the first time this winter
and traffic is immediately disrupted.
There is a now 1600 km. traffic-jam (Friday four o'clock a.m.)
with a length of 4191 km in this little country!
Fortunately I'm not in this traffic-jam, so I have no picture of it.

I made these pictures in the neighbourhood of my house.

Ice or Art?

Sunshine and freezing in Holland.
I was in Urk today. Urk is a small town, until 1939 it was an island.
Urk has a very close and religious community
The important economic pillar of the village is the fishery. After the IJsselmeer was formed, the Urkers fished on the North Sea. Due to rising prices of fish, at present Urk is a very prosperous village. In the past, many lives were lost in storms on the Zuiderzee and North Sea. There is a memorial to lost fisherman on Urk, popularly known as the "Urker vrouw": a statue of a woman looking out to sea, vainly awaiting the return of her husband and sons.
I saw this ship at the harbour with lots of icicle, it looked real ice...
